About

Wilfrid Hansen was passionate about lighting and sound, and determined to make a career in this branch of the arts. When he was still at school and painfully shy about coming forward in anything but his beloved technical area, he built his skills and made himself useful to anyone looking for help in the industry. Tragically, at the age of just 18, Wilfrid died doing what he loved most, constructing lighting and sound for live theatre and events.

In his honour, the Wilfrid Hansen Technical Scholarship Trust was established on May 26th, 2002. Since then, the Trust is proud to have provided assistance to one student annually towards training for a technical career in the NZ theatre and event industries.

In 2023, responding to changes in both the education and entertainment sectors – which had created a need for more entry level training – the scholarship was pivoted to provide a week-long course to benefit several students at once.
